Study Says “A Drink a Day Helps Older
Women's Alertness”
A recent article I read online stated, “Older women might toast, ‘Here's to
your mental health,’ after a study out showed a drink a day can keep them alert.
Low levels of alcohol appear to have cognitive benefits," said Francine
Grodstein, a doctor at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts,
who led the research.” Well, that article certainly grabbed my attention! We all like to have a
glass of wine now and again, but to think that it could actually improve your
mental state? Hum? That’s an interesting concept! The information came from a study from The New England Journal of Medicine
who published a 10-year study of 12,480 women, aged 70 to 81. Their results showed that women who had a daily glass of wine, beer or
spirits over at least four years showed a 20 percent reduced risk of severe
decline in their mental faculties as they aged, according to the study, which
said boosted blood flow to the brain appeared to be an important factor in the
results. "Women who consistently were drinking about one-half to one drink per day
had both less cognitive impairment as well as less decline in their cognitive
function compared to women who didn't drink at all," Grodstein said. The article also reported that mental agility and memory performance in women
who drank moderately was that of someone a year and a half younger, compared
with their counterparts who did not drink, the study said. When discussing this article with the doctors at Caring Medical, they
reported to us that they too see that patients who often have a small (note
small) drink at night do seem to be healthier. They postulate that the cause of
this is due to a number of things: A small amount of alcohol thins the blood which helps disease prevention.
A half a glass of wine or a shot of Scotch decreases their stress. It
gives them a little time to unwind and relax.
